If this a demo, then all the teen age bands look out and look back. This is The Stranglers,

Agreed ,this is a solid demo ,and I may actually like the sound of the guitar , perhaps a little bit more also , but the vocals are so much more personal in this performance , that may be what I like most here , this vrsion may be a bit sexier then the final accetate...and they did play it tight...

Oh ,they were a punk band alright ,and ya know why ? cause they had real balls ,not silly little plastic balls like so many "New Wave " bands ,like Blondie ,or the Talking Heads (both great in their own right ) and they never shyed from showing those balls in public ,on ,or off stage ,thats what PUNK was ,attitude ,not neccessarily politics, that came in with hardcore ,a bit later.Don't let their musical education fool u ,they were kids doin it for their peers ,and they struck that note a hard...

this demo is better than the album track ,theres somthing quite special going on here ,they seem to be hearing what their doing with an inquisitive ear ,and exploring each note ,where on the album ,its pretty much already set in stone ,I love it all ,and this is a great find ,to bad one of those 20 min pre demo , jam tapes of this song hasn't shown up ,one of my favorite songs to play on the bass...

Im not sure they were a punk band as such or indeed ever claimed to be. They were out the same time and may have had some punkish lyrics. But the sound and music in general were superior to any of their contemporaries, save perhaps The Damned and Curtain Call.

IF I LIVE FOR, ANOTHER 50 YEARS, I WANT TO HEAR STUFF LIKE THIS, PERFORMED, BY GUY' S LIKE, THE MIGHTY BAND, THE ONE AND ONLY, THE STRANGLERS.

So many of the idiots I knew who liked punk didn't really feel any connection with the Stranglers. I did immediately and many arguments ensued of which I never backed down such aws my love for this band. I saw them 7 times between 1978 and 1987 and it would have been more had they not chosen to play over 18's venues and give Birmingham a miss on many occasions. I still have all my scrapbooks full of cuttings from 1977-90. Still the best band to come out of the 1970's, punk or not.

Tight as fuck. And for '75. Wow - talk about ahead of the curve. Pisser ending. But that, and the bass sound, are imo the only things that put this in front of the album version. Otherwise, this demo has a shitload going for it. Dare I say it, a better guitar sound for one?

I remember Hugh saying in an interview that the band were dreadful at this time, but had good songs as their saving grace. This early demo shows how competent and confident they actually were - think Hugh's being a bit harsh on himself and the rest of the lads! Truly magnificent band for many reasons, and the most important of all was that they created so many wonderfully melodic songs without compromising their menacing persona.

The Stranglers were never a punk band, but a bloody superb, no nonsense pub rock combo who punched way way above their weight :)
