Well, the sad fact is that the majority of the Austrian people welcomed the Anschluss (the unification of Germany and Austria) and within a short time after the Wehrmacht rolled in, they were persecuting (in the most horrible ways) their Jewish fellow Austrians. Many of the top Nazis were themselves Austrian and George Clare the Jewish writer said he actually felt safer in Berlin than in Vienna, and that's saying something.
