I think he's talking about the actual sound of weezer. Matt Sharp brought something important to those first two albums. That my friend, is harmony. Cuomo is a great melody writer. But Sharps Harmony enhances it sooo much.

Matt Sharp never had any part to do with writing the songs for the first two weezer albums. The first guitarist, Jason Cropper, had a small part; and Patrick Wilson along with Cuomo co-wrote a couple of the songs. The only reason Sharp was in the band was b/c he was the only one they knew with a bass guitar. The production level at the time was the reason for their sound at the time plus the 90's. That's part of the reason why he left weezer; so he could do his own thing which was the Rentals.

@Caughtfish your thinking of the production of alternative rock of the mid 1990's after kurt cobain died, a lot of music from this time sound the same like that dog, weezer, frogpond, and of course the rentals but the only difference with the rentals is that they used moog synthesizers

@omgsolzar he literally did nothing to contribute, he just played the parts rivers wrote for him, he was a guitarist first and just picked up the bass guitar you see always from his house which was laying around

If you were to replace that synthesizer with a Weezer-esque guitar sound, it'd be even more Weezer.

@zanpinkerton I disagree i think this song needs more weezer and it would be perfect. IMO matt sharp was a large part of weezer which made their later albums not as good. At the same time the rentals feel like they are missing something and I feel that is river's input.
