Such a great song! Does anyone have the bass tab?

I've always seen Diary as like the missing link between noise rock/proto-indie and emo

yeah i dont like how some people think emo is a new thing, the best emo days were in the 1990s

I liked this album, but IMO, Horse Latitudes will always be their best.

@monterx1 Emo ≠ depressing, bleak music. Emo = emotional, personal. That doesn't necessarily mean it has to be sad emotions. This song isn't really a good representation of "emo". Check out their song "A Picture Postcard". That song would be easier to understand why they're called emo. But really, genres don't really matter. I'd have no problem calling them "punk" or "indie".

I hate you when you bring up the genre of emo music, and people automatically think Hawthorne Heights. Just a shame.

I always thought Sunny Day lacked a lot of the self awareness that latter 90s emo bands had. Like TPR, these guys kinda knew that they were dorks you know? SDRE were like, way too wrapped up in themselves... super introverted and stuff. Not as fun. But I know for some it's not about fun. TPR and Cap'n Jazz are my favorites.

I like this stuff more now than I did in the 90's, when it was new. Back then, most of the bands like these just sounded like poor imitations of Sunny Day Real Estate to me. When SDRL released the first 2 albums, it was a totally new sound. And they could actually play their instruments well, unlike the myriad of imitators that followed. I appreciate this more now, b/c it's simple and nostalgic.

I fucking love The Promise Ring. One of my favorite emo bands.

@rennekilo - Blah blah blah. Any time you talk about "real" anything, you're marking yourself as a rank amateur. There were dozens of other bands before The Promise Ring which utilised these elements. Even if they're not best described as emo, these bands are essential to note in any conversation of emo. Starting at Sunny Day Real Estate totally ignores the contributions of bands like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon.

ha ha, are you kidding? Devil Wears Prada is amazing.

This band is the definition of emo, you know. I feel sorry for the members, they probably cry watching kids at MCR concerts. Lameeeeeee. Anyways, if you read "Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers and Emo" you'll realise that the promise ring was the second real emo band. Sunny Day Real Estate was first, paving the road for the promise ring and bands to follow.

Uh, why is the album "surprisingly" good? The albums they released before it were very solid, although this is their career apex to be sure. And don't call it emo, that word has been ruined to refer to dumb crap that idiot kids listen to now. I agree on Sunny Day's first album. Very good. Also check out Braid, Jets to Brazil and Rainer Maria if you like this sort of thing.

Told you this was a good one. If you like this, you NEED Sunny Day Real Estate's debut. It's a little less punk pop and more depressing, but it's good too. Bands like Drop Dead Gorgeous or Devil Wears PrADA SUCK!!
