yeah melodic wise it's definitely trance influenced, no disputing that. But early hardstyle had almost no trance influence. It was like a slowed down version of oldschool hardcore but with reverse basses. The shit used to have breakbeats, and random house samples. The whole giant break down with massive saw leeds and a chunky bass kick are all relatively new, from the past 4-5 years for sure.

Well.. They're kind of the same concept. Hardtrance is a little bit softer than Hardstyle, but Hardstyle's roots comes from trance. Compare some melodies, they can be very similar.
