It's not hard to know that this Nice song was from '67. 'Careful...Eugene' was from '68. Perhaps, the name Eugene in both songs is coincidence. Yet, maybe the Floyd was giving homage. Both bands had great keyboardists.

Amazing ending ....was it the producer's or engineer's cut?

Ever since I was a 5-year-old kid in 1967, this song--and only this version of this song--has made me want to walk to a mountain range, find a cliff and jump off. It's exquisite. And it always makes me suicidal. It's unbearably sad.

Outside of Rondo, I think this was the best song on the album and it was also the only one that successfully showcased all of the band's talents equally. As far as which came first, this song came out before the Pink Floyd song. Some critics think it inspired the Floyd song, but I think it is pure coincidence. The Nice were an amazing group. It would have been interesting to hear what they would have ended up sounding like if O'List had stayed--he is a really interesting, talented guitarist on this album--the birth of progressive rock.

What a beautiful song and lyrics. And yes, David O'List was very original sounding.

even though Id been into music since lonnie donegan ,and there was so much good stuff from then to this, emerlist davjack really took me to new level, as I was at thatdevelopmental teen time too. it was probably written earlier, but I remember pink floyds live performances of careful with axe starting 1968/9 and the nices eugene in 1967. jackson heights s acoustic version of this song from 1970 is good too.

@Sterndi1 The lyrics can be found on some guy's site on DeviantArt. I forget the URL but I can warn you to STAY AWAY from most of the mainstream lyrics sites. "Rancid atmosphere with despair" they say. Good lord, how can somebody get it so wrong?

Okay, I must be insane, but I have been looking through various (legal) mixes of this song all 'round the internet. Why? Because the version on Spotify does NOT have the vocalist's voice breaking ever-so-slightly at 4:13. In all other respects it is nearly identical. I must be insane. Really. But that slight catch in the voice really "sells" this song to me and made it one of my all-time favorites from The Nice. But this is 2011 and such things get "fixed", don't they? Geez.

@bogeybast The box I mentioned has the first 3 albums, plus singles, unreleased live and studio tracks, a radio promo by John Peel, plus the whole of the Autumn To Spring collection with the different mixes. Really affordable, excellent remastering (minimal use of compression and no-noise), and comes with a nice booklet as well.

@bogeybast If you have Autumn To Spring and Emerlist Davjack, keep them both; the songs common to both are radically remixed. On Autumn To Spring. O'List is mixed low and Emerson's keyboards are loud as Charisma tried to cash in on ELP's success by presenting the music as progressive instead of psych .If you haven't picked it up yet, get the 3-CD box set "Here Come The Nice", which collects all of The Nice's recordings for Immediate plus tons of unreleased rarities. Amazon has it for $10-$15.

"Autumn To Spring" (Charisma) shares 6 songs in common, including this one, with "Emerlist Davjack" (Columbia). "Autumn To Spring" contains 3 additional songs, including 'America'; "Emerlist" only a couple: 'Rondo' & 'War & Peace.' I haven't thought about this or listened to this music in decades. It's so pleasant to be reaquainted with these gems, thanks to you.

.....in the days before CD's and ebay I looked for this album for about five years before I finally found a copy ! ...I don't think there were too many sold in Australia a great lp, you can't really compare it to the later albums without O'List.. that was a different sound ...a different band almost....still good just different
