My dad used to sing this song to us kids when we were young, one of his favorites. He was a WW2 vet, a navigator on a PBY5A in the Pacific, and I think it was a popular song of the time, or maybe he learned it in college as a drinking song. Who knows? He is long gone now, but his memory stays with us all. I was really delighted to find it on YouTube! I've emailed a link to my brother and sisters. This isn't the exact version I remember, but it's close enough for me!

My Mom said that her Dad (my Grandpa) used to sing this song to her and her brother and sister! I found one of the older versions and played it for her, and she said that sounded like it! She never heard a recording of it, but Grandpa knew it and would sing it to them a long time ago. I'd never heard the New Christy Minstrels version until today and listened to it. It sounds a lot like the old one I'd heard before, w/the same tune and most of the same words. It's hilarious; I like it!

When I discovered the song, I was reading a book called "Headhunters and the Airmen” about a bomber that crashed in the Borneo jungle during WWII. The head hunters fed and protected the surviving crew from the Japanese. During the long hideout period the air crew taught the headhunters songs from home; the passage in the book said one of the headhunter's favorites, was none other than "HALLELUJAH! I'M A BUM"

I'm glad you put a good copy of this song on Youtube! When I discovered this 2 years ago, I instantly became infatuated with it. I really love the song. This song is New Christy Minstrels take on a depression era song "HALLELUJAH! I'M A BUM - Harry MAC McClintock." Both are GREAT renditions!
