Its just my own theory but for me it's a little bit like if the lyrics would tell the feeling that the crew of the USS Ward had. Hear me out:1 or 2 hours before the attack on Pearl Harbour an american destroyer(USS Ward) detected(spotted the periscope) and sank a japanese midget submarine just outside of Pearl. Of course they immediately informed the HQ but they did nothing. Propably they didn't take them seriusly because a midget sub has very low range meaning a bigger mother ship(which in this case was another bigger submarine) would have to be some where around near, which they thought was impossible(now imagine their thoughts about a huge japanese taskforce with several aircraft carriers). Funfact: That 1 or 2 hour wouldn't have been enough to heat up the big ships(as they were steam powered) so they couldn't have left Pearl but they(the cruisers and battleships) had an immence anti aircraft arsenal which all by itself could have minimized the demage smoking most of the japs off the skies before they could get in range to drop their bombs torpedoes or strafe. And we didn't mention that the US fighters would have enough time to take off and rub a few jap aircraft off even further away from Pearl. So yeah.... Ignoring this direct warning was one big mistake and i can imagine what the crew of the USS Ward felt after more than 2000 of their fellows diead because no one really took them seriously.
