NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Capitol S00-12045) Out of Los Angeles, this 1980 LP cut is the New Wave band, The Knack, giving homage to legendary record producer, Phil Spector and is more than likely the most spot-on Spectoresque, 'Wall Of Sound' production of the 1980's. Just as Sonny Bono, Marshall Lieb and Jerry Riopelle were known to recreate the Spector Sound in the 1960's, The Knack and their producer Mike Chapman, succeeded in doing the same two decades later with this echo-laden, percussive arrangement that melds the style of The Ronettes' 'Be My Baby' and The Crystals' 'Then He Kisses Me'. A very unlikely sound and style coming from this high energy group that hit the big time in 1979 with their #1 smash, 'My Sharona'.

Founder and lead singer, Doug Fieger teamed up with original members, Berton Averre (lead guitar, backing vocals and keyboards), Prescott Niles (bass), and Bruce Gary (drums) in 1978 and began a whirlwind two years of touring and recording. The group took a year off due to exhaustion and internal friction, regrouped in 1981 briefly and then called it quits by 1982.

Between 1986 and 2010 there were a few group reunions until the death of Doug Fieger on February 14, 2010 after losing his battle with cancer.

What a great band. Meteoric rise that unfortunately did not last... I've always appreciated their musicianship, and timing. One of the best in my opinion in this regard.

Young love, unrequited, doesn't get any more heartbreaking.

RCA really hyped them after "Voices" took off. I loved Hall and Oates during the early 80's too. Their "Private Eyes" album is a excellent album when you get past the monster hits. But their later albums suffered from stiff drum & midi synth programming which has dated badly, and their songwriting became lazy and formula.

This may be one of the best works the Knack has ever done even though many of them consider them a rock n roll band more known for my Sharona. On occasions like these there is another side to any group that showed a mushy side and this is one those moments.

The opening riff is borrowed directly from "Be My Baby." The riff was used frequently in the early 60's, repetitively in the Animals' "It's My Life," and inverted for eerie effect in Jan and Dean's "Dead Man's Curve." This song recalls not only Spector's productions and arrangements, but also those of Spector acolyte Brian Wilson. It is easy to hear his plaintive voice singing Fieger's words. It's not really odd to hear The Knack reference Spector,

That Hall & Oates tune, 'The Last Time' is a good one. Back in the 70's and 80's I bought every 45 that they put out. I only bought the 'Voices' LP. In the 80's it seemed that every single they released came with a colorful picture sleeve too.

Great song! The Knack were a seriously underrated group. Another fine 70's Spector tribute to dig up is Hall & Oates "The Last Time" from their "Along The Red Ledge" LP which also borrows the "Be My Baby" beat.

I've got that compilation LP from the UK, 'Spector 74/76' somewhere in a crate out in my garage. (Bought it over 30 years ago) I don't remember even knowing what that tune sounds like. I'll have to make an attempt to unearth it and get an MP3 to you. If I can't remember anything about it, more than likely it didn't make an impression on me. That's just my opinion. 'Stupid Guy' by The Paranoids is great. Sleigh bells and jackhammer drums will win me over every time. Thanks for the compliment!
