Late to this thread, sorry. Two comments; Sarah - that's Dave Guard, not Bob Shane, singing lead. Eliza Gilkyson's version of this, for my taste, is WAY over-orchestrated. For a song like this, to my ear, simplicity is king.

This song was actually written by Terry Gilkyson. His daughter eliza does a remarkable cover of it, and is a superb musician. Check out her song "Highway 9", for example.

I found it! this song is one of my favorite Kingston Trio songs, and brings back memories of childhood and the pure, unrestrained freedom I once experienced when I first heard it. thanks so much for sharing it!

What I specially love about the KT is the perfect annunciation of each word ....as a kid I played my KT albums to paper thinness, ...and I knew every word....cause you can hear every word ....Bob SHane bites off the end of the words so crisply .... oh and their choice of songs, great harmony, and a frailing banjo .....what's not to love ?

I think the comment on addiction pertains to the "if you go you can't come back" verse in the song .A man who longs for something he has given up in his past even when he seems to have everything he ever wanted. It doesn't matter what the consequence if you suffer addiction. In this case a man longs for the freedom of an old way while reminding himself that he would not give a nickel for the man he used to be.If he were to Go Bum Again.

No-one can touch them for their singing, arrangements and their interpretations.

to say it's a song about addiction might be groovy to you,man-but that completely destroys the magic.same guy that wrote the '' scarecrow of romney marsh'' theme. people have such trouble understanding the mysterious language of music.

Great song. If you haven't heard the version of it by the Serendipity Singers, seek it out.... I think they harmonize on the whistle even better, and they use an acoustic guitar for a locomotive chug and banjo plucking for the clickety clack. It's awesome.

I have to identify with first poster: this album arrived at my parent's home shortly before I did! and this song has haunted me my entire life. As I child, of course, i saw it in its literal form as a song about a man who misses-- can't get loose of-- his hobo days. But it's also a story-- the story-- of addiction. A masterpiece of its time.

This album/song was released the same year that I was born, and I could swear to you that I've heard it all my life. It features in some of my writings, in fact, and as I often say -- don't care what your musical style is, this is one haunting little story-song. I'm so very grateful to you for posting it.
