"Log Cabin Home in the Sky"

Mike Heron

All around this wide country the winter it has now begun

Now is the time to slip away from the California sun

To a place where a man can be free as the wind

As wild as the huskies' cry

Now winter is nigh let us fly to my log cabin in the sky

With snow piling all round the door

And many a log on the stove

Where the chickadee's singing a comforting song

I'll show you it's you that I love

O let the wolves howl, they won't find us here

By a soft oil lamp we will lie

Now winter is nigh let us fly to my log cabin in the sky

Now there comes a time to every man

When he must turn his back on the crowd

When the glare of the lights gets much too bright

And the music plays too loud

When a man must run from the deeds he has done

Recalling those days with a sigh.

Now winter is nigh let us fly to my log cabin in the sky

I knew Likki in the early 1980s. She had the guitar Robin is holding in the above picture. It was her most treasured possession.

Never felt the need to get stoned listening to music like this. The music itself is a far more powerful drug than any chemical combination...

This is such great "stoned" music. We all need this occasionally.

I feel for your loss and the beautiful tune you played "Cabin....". We played "First Girl I Loved" to put my husband to rest in January 2012. I could barely make it through this favorite song he used to play on his J45 Gibson.

Ah yes, heady days.....I saw them when they came to the U.S. have close photos of them. So wonderful....Was 18 when I fell in love with them, and still carry their music everywhere with me. Are a consolation, inspiration and beautiful resource for touching life in a most harmonious way, regardless of sounding just like a hippie as I am....

They were such fun. I saw them hundreds of times both on stage and wandering around Edinburgh. They came to a concert we put on with the brilliant Caravan for Shelter. Heady days.

Well there comes a time in every man's life, when he must turn his back on the crowd When the glare of the lights is much too bright and the music plays too loud... Just...utter...brilliance.

Banjo player, Billy Connelly, once played this on a film he made with the BBC. I think he was in the Arctic at the time. It certainly appeared that winter was nigh. As I recall, he was living in an igloo rather than a log cabin, in fact. He described the song as being one of his favourites. It has also remained one of mine since first hearing it.
