Part 2 of "Ithkos" from ISB's final album "Hard Rope and Silken Twine".

Lyrics:

...Gotta come right out and say it

Pale Sybaris I bear you great scorn

Tlakin' 'bout your fluted pillars and your muted life

It's worse to me

Than Death's own chariot rollin'

Oh hold my gaze light of day

That my thoughts they will not stray

To Hippolyta

The vows that set her free

Denied me

It was right there in Sybaris famed

That I met with her who's named

Hippolyta

Oh hold my gaze bring not the sight

Of that awful wondrous night

Far outside the city walls

Hte Huntress Dance does call

Hippolyta

And the vows that set her free

Denied me

Every one who listened to the Velvet Underground wanted to start a band"."Every one who listened to ISB were at the least mildly stoned.

I see people complaining that they didn't just make the same songs over and over again, but this is one of the most amazing pieces of songwriting. This tale of a Merchant, who wanders far through the known world, wanders also musically through a lot of the musical world of the time it was written- spacey, classical, rock, folk, Greek, and others are all used in this piece. The hard rock part people seem to be complaining about, is the merchant unable to cope with the unlovely modernity of Sybaris after the beauty of Lesbos- a beauty he finds reflected in Hippolyte both intellectually and musically. This is an authentic and amazing piece of songwriting, as perfect and complete a world as Court of the Crimson King or '39 by Queen. You don't have to like it, that's none of my business, but I'd be happy to know you all knew what it was before saying you didn't like it.

And, I'd add that "Ithkos" doesn't waste a note. Just one killer motif after another, and all strung together by an "ancient Greek" theme. And ISB proves that they can rock, too, in their own curious way.

Ouch! I liked "No Ruinous Feud" along with everything else. My fave is probably "Hangman's Beautiful Daughter."

I agree. The album as a whole is pretty mediocre, though much better than its predecessor "No Ruinous Feud". At least Mike and Robin both went on to record some exceptional acoustic solo material. It makes up for their last few rather tepid, mainstream albums as a group.
