"The Huron Carol"

Lyrics adapted by Petrus Romanus from the original lyrics that are attributed to Saint Jean De Brebeuf

Original Melody - adapted by Saint Jean De Brebeuf

Arranged by Petrus Romanus

Sung by Mary Romanus ("she was absolutely beside herself")

Keyboard by Petrus Romanus

Here are the Song Lyrics:

T'was at the dawn of winter-time

When all the birds had fled,

The Almighty Eternal Father in Heaven

Sent angel choirs instead;

Before His light the stars grew dim,

And wandering shepherds heard the hymn:

"Jesus your, King is born, Jesus, is born,

In excelsis Gloria!" (- to Him be Glory in the highest degree!)

Within a cave in Bethlehem

The new-born Babe was found,

A virgin mother's tender heart

Embraced His beauty round;

And as the shepherds saw and sighed,

The angel's song rang loud and high...

"Jesus your, King is born, Jesus, is born,

In excelsis Gloria!"

The coldest months of wintertime

Are not so kind and fair

As is the King of Glory

To contrite hearts out there.

Poor souls from far before him knelt

His Healing Love inside they felt.

"Jesus your, King is born, Jesus, is born,

In excelsis Gloria!"

O children of Jerusalem,

The Faithful Remnant too,

The Holy Child the King of Heaven

Is born this day for you.

So bow your hearts before this boy

Now trade your sins for peace and joy.

"Jesus your, King is born, Jesus, is born,

In excelsis Gloria!"

The Huron Carol was written by the Canadian Martyr, Saint Jean de Brebeuf - a Jesuit Priest and Missionary who ministered to to the Native Canadians, and in particular the Huron tribe. The original lyrics (that have now been adapted by us, for a more 'internationally friendly' listener version), echoed Brebeuf's attempts to explain Christianity by using religious imagery in such a way that the natives could easily understand. And so, when we made this video, we were looking for visuals, that likewise, would somehow connect with the Native Canadian experience of the Nativity, when it actually happened. Indeed, when Jesus was born, 2000 years ago, there were many signs that were given to the ancestors of the Huron tribe. One of those signs, was through a particular manifestation of the Northern Lights - one that was never captured on camera; but one that is re-created, through the visuals, and accompanying music, in this video.
