The modern English term Gael derives ultimately from the Old Irish (Ancient Gaelic) word Goídel. Ethnicity is a complex subject and difficult to prove on way or the other. But the gaelic family of languages, (Irish, Scottish, and Manx) had their origin in Ireland an so likely did Gaelic culture.

I'm afraid you are badly mistaken, what you operate on is a matter of faith, i.e. you believe it because you want it to be true. There is absolutely no evidence of Irish anything in Scotland. Scotland is the elder nation of the group in these isles, that is a fact that cannot be reasonably/rationally argued with. Scotland - 843 AD England - 927 AD Ireland - 1542 AD. Sprigs is right on that. Your views are politically motivated not historical fact. Scotland and Ulster were both known as Scottia.

I would love to visit, being Irish I can't relate to the song but I can say "Fuck the English!" I also love the art work. Hail Odin!

No what you say is entirely incorrect and has not basis in historical fact. The first use of the word scot was by irish monks in the 5th century. Saint Columbanus described himself as a scot in the 400's. Indeed Ireland was known in these times as Scotus Major and Scotland as Scotus Minor.

Or rather, a lot of you PP's have fallen for the pro-Irish RC version of history. The term 'Gael' is no more significant than the term Viking, both mean the exact same thing, "Raider", and the Scots controlled all the sea routes between Scotland up to Ulster and back. Plus the term Gael is wrongly used by PP's and RC Irish. It actually derives from the ancient British appellation "Gwydell" - which was used to describe the north. Even the term 'Scot' has an original British appellation, 'Y-Scot'.

wow a lot of people here have fallen for the anglicised version of history and the nature of the gaels i think they have a name oh yeah sevco fans. i dont see a lot of gaelic football in scotland and isnt the name gael derived from the welsh who use it to mean invader as they were invaded from ireland not scotland which didnt exist till the irish scotti got there.

Being part of the EU is not self-determination!! Nor is it real independence, Scotland is already somewhat independent, and being part of the EU is just swapping one union for another one, albeit a much worse one, that Scotland did not create and are no longer the most prosperous part of.

During the Normandy landing in 1944, the Black Watch regiment brought its best piper, who walked up and down the beach and played all throughout the landings (he was literally one of the first to hit the beach). The Germans never shot him, because it was considered very very bad luck to deliberately kill an insane person. Upon hearing this, a comment was made 'he's not crazy, he's a highlander'.

Uh actually, to correct you. The term 'Pict' was nothing more than a name the Roman Eumenius put onto the Scots to refer to them as being tattooed, hence 'Picti' - 'painted people'. So the Scots effectively and ultimately were Picts and vive versa. Scotland/Caledonia at that time was two kingdoms, one on the East and the other on the West, the Western side at Dunadd, also ruled Ulster across the Sea as an offshore colony, as St.Patrick, whom civilised the Hiberni (Irish) wrote in his confession.
