Punk is dead (for anybody who gets the reference), and so goes the death of music in general. There are no music scenes anymore, no movements, no revolutions, no anything. Why do you think everything, movies, music, protesting, clothes, slang is retro! To quote the vernacular of my younger self, the past decade has been extremely lame and creatively bankrupt. No wonder young ones try so hard to immerse themselves in long pointless MMORPGs, because real life stinks! Old bands are all we have left

Great band this though it never ceases to amaze me how many fake punks there are out there like male punks that think they're being really punk rock by knocking Women about and generally behaving more like chavs. There are two types of punk the fake ones who think it's all about aggression and the real ones who know it's more about not conforming expressing themselves and keeping a sense of humour, it's an attitude even more than it's the way you dress.

This is one reason that punk died, or at least was heavily tainted, in the mid 80s. Unity is huge, though hard to see and hard to attain. It's an uphill fight, but does happen in punk rock. People that mindlessly insult, rage, & fight like this are the antithesis of punk ideals.

I did still like some metal, like Slayer, Destruction, Exciter, and crossover bands like S.O.D, Cryptic Slaughter, Excel & Anthrax, and I still went to most metal shows, but so did a lot of punks as San Antonio didn't have a lot of great bands come that far south. Many times metal bands would open for punk bands or vice/versa. Huge fights & riots would sometimes break out, like at the D.R.I./Slayer show. We would often go to Austin because they got more good punk tours than did San Antonio.

That early 80s Exploited gig was my 1st punk show. I had no clue. As I said, me & a friend were so impressed by the local opening band, Raging Woodies, that we went to the stage like metalheads to headbang! BIG mistake, the punks nearly killed us and Wattie constantly swung his mike within centimeters of our heads. Few months later went to Black Flag since they were advertised in some metal mag as being "heavy." I was so amazed at Black Flag & the people/scene that I converted that very night.

I agree with you, but, in a major way, punk actually really did die in 1985. Watch the very good documentary "American Hardcore" to hear the how & why of punk's mid-80s death from those who know it best, the musicians of the early 80s hardcore bands themselves. American Hardcore is an extremely enjoyable film for any who claim a love of hardcore punk.
