This is not a shanty. Shanties were work songs of the mid 19th century sung on merchant ships, mainly on the Atlantic routes. The rhythms were the rythms of the particular work that the sailors were doing. It's easy to look up, even wikipedia does a pretty good job of it :-) Fiddlers Green was written by John Conolly, an Englishman born in Lincolshire.

In my defence I have tried it on the Channel and it fits the speed of the Waves. Indeed the whole CD does. Or is there something else going on?. Rowing in Waltz time sounds like a Monty Python sketch. Tnx.

Ehhhh, what??? It's a waltz mate, would be hard to row in 3/4 tempo. Worksongs is 4/4.

Me too. That's because it is a sea shanty and the rhythm and melody fit in with the speed of the waves and the heeling of the boat, as sea shanties are meant to do, probably even going all the way back to boats with multiple sets of oars, so the rowers can keep time with each other (and avoid the blows from the whip)!.

RIP, you will be missed Barney. You brought a lot to the table in the Irish Music world, a pity that your talent and artistry is gone. Pull a Rum bottle off the trees for Me.
