i don't really understand how you expect artists to make a living if they refuse to link themselves to record labels which often compromise artistic integrity (not to mention take most of the money themselves). she's not "taking things for free". she makes art and people have a choice to support her, if they like her art and want to see more of it, or if they don't like what she's doing, they can choose not to support her, which of course, is fine too.

I know, right? If it were just confidence, I'd proud and inspired! Instead I'm let down. After watching her TED talk, I am 100% convinced that this woman who I once really admired is now manipulating her fans by likening her willingness to take things for free to profound and rare moments of human connection. The best part is, you guys don't have to defend her; she's totally winning.

She hasn't developed any ego. Her songs are still wonderful, precise and some of the realest things I've ever heard. Perhaps what you really mean is that she's grown above self-loathing and self-hating and has much more confidence in her voice and singing style. She's really grown/growing. That's just my opinion anyway.

Amanda does have an ego. But so what? So do many other musicians (many of them not as good as her). I'm not a fan of her ego either, but I still admire her. After all, she's human, so I think it's only natural that she has flaws.

Thank you so much for sorting that out for me. THAT is why I don't like Amanda's ego, you're right. It has nothing to do with anything else. And certainly, I am the only poor, self-hating soul who feels that way. Gee! :) What an insightful night it's been!
