The Crow On The Cradle

by Sydney Carter

The sheep's in the meadow

The cow's in the corn

Now is the time for a child to be born

He'll cry for the moon and he'll laugh at the sun

If he's a boy he'll carry a gun

Sang the crow on the cradle

And if it should be that this baby's a girl

Never you mind if her hair doesn't curl

Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes

And a bomber above her wherever she goes

Sang the crow on the cradle

Rockaby baby, the dark and the light

Somebody's baby is born for a fight

Rockaby baby, the white and the black

Somebody's baby is not coming back

Sang the crow on the cradle

Your mammy and pappy they'll scrape and they'll save

Build you a coffin and dig you a grave

Hush a bye little one why do you weep

We've got a toy that will put you to sleep

Sang the crow on the cradle

Bring me my gun and I'll shoot that bird dead

That's what your mammy and pappy once said

Crow on the cradle what should I do

That is a thing that I leave up to you

Sang the crow on the cradle

I tried 'desperately' to find the extraordinary Collins doing this song. Linked to google, to UTube .... etal. Got to a German site. I can only imagine her ... her interpretation. I have discs of the familys of the Irish tenors trying songs like 'Singing Bird' and 'Gypsy Rover'. Charming. But not soul shattering like the Celt males. Collins... Collins on the other hand..... I will find it C6. Thank you.

Well originally an english northern song fron the XVI/XVII th century called " The kye's (cows) in the meadow ", The sheep's in the corn, Thy o'erlang in thy bed, Bonny at morn, Canny at neet, ... The bird's in their nest, and the troot's in the burn ; thy hinders thy mother at every turn. Canny at neet, bonny at morn. ... We're all laid idle Wi' keepin' in the bairn ; The lad will not work and the lass will not lairn ..." Deftly played and sung , Great thanks !

apparently not...but it makes sense...really...just like one is not entitled to put out a cover, on a cd say, without paying the royalties

hmmm...the Van Morrison song I missed somehow. Was it a cover? You playing the song? too bad. i thought it was okay to perform covers of songs.

yea...I know what you mean...good song...I'm working on Everybody Knows...Leonard Cohen...a great one...Exile Productions'sheriff though, along with YouTube told me to take down the pirate copy of Van Morrison's " It Stoned Me " so I did and I took down the Dylan song " As I Went Out One Morning ". But this one is more like a Public Domain song methinks.
