April 1992 gig at the Bristol Bridge Inn, Bristol. The gig was billed under a "Night of Trash" for the release of Thee Herbert Oranges debut LP and featured both bands.
A local hack reviewed the gig for Venue magazine and complained that the (Brooklyn born) Cannibals' singer Mike Spenser had a "phoney New York drawl"! This clip starts with a great example of the drawl - judge it yourself. And check out on page 158 of (Wreckless) Eric Goulden's autobigraphy his comment on Mikes accent: "...an American pretending to be a Cockney. He sounded like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins - cor blimey, mate". I love his accent; its one of the best radio voices yawll ever hear; check out his shows on The Trash Can on Resonance FM or via the internet at www.thetrashcan.co.uk
Meanwhile back to the gig: in his review the hack commented on the two bands performances that "the Oranges were good enough to eat but the Cannibals were the result of eating too many". Track down Thee Herbert Oranges on youtube and judge for yourselves how unfair this comment is!
Ironically 12 years later the hack got the job depping for the Oranges' singer and shared the stage at Bristol Bike festival with Mike in a Canniballed Cannibals offshoot. Video of that exists if I can find it and I can expose the identity of the hack who should have researched the background of his assignment. I am amazed that Venue allowed such a musically ignorant journalist loose to influence the public with his stabbing comments; this probably desecrated sales of the Cannibals LPs in the South West. Music journalists should be made up of people that know a lot about music, like that guy who currently runs the tuesday night music quiz at the Prom wine bar in Bristol.
