The original version by Larry Murray (who wrote it) is also posted on Youtube, but I think the Byrds did it better. I'll bet Clarence had the memory of a real dog in mind when he sang this one.

GREAT song !!! Finally found it here ! I'm going to sing this one when my Ol' Best friend, Sparky, the Beagle has his final farewell !!!! He's been my best friend and companion for 13 + years now....... Soon too take a Chariot ride with Jesus ++++

How ironic the lyrics are: "...he's been hit down on the highway..." Clarence White was hit and killed by drunk driver while loading equipment into his car (I believe). Clarence was a great talent who could have done so much more. At least he left us with a beautiful legacy of songs like this.

Clarence White... This is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. The Byrds, Gram Parsons, and those associated with this 70's country-rock genre... some of the most soulful music... We'd have a better country if this stuff were listened to more now.
