"The Three Bells", also known as "Jimmy Brown" or "Little Jimmy Brown", is a song made popular by The Browns in 1959.[1] The single reached number one on the U.S. country and pop charts, outperforming a competing version by Dick Flood. The version by The Browns also hit number ten on the Hot R&B Sides chart. It was based on the 1945 French language song "Les trois cloches" by Jean Villard Gilles and Marc Herrand. The English lyrics were written by Bert Reisfeld and first recorded by Melody Maids in 1948. The song was a major 1952-53 hit by Edith Piaf and Les Compagnons de la chanson. The song documents three stages of the life of "Jimmy Brown"--his birth, his marriage, and his death.

The Three Bells touched me in 1959. I quickly learned the lyrics and have sung it poorly my whole life. Sorry to hear that the single bell is ringing. Thank you for leaving all of your music for us, Jim Ed.

One rainy morning dark and grayA soul winged its way to heavenJimmy Brown had passed awayJust a lonely bell was ringingIn the little valley townTwas farewell that it was singingTo our good old Jimmy BrownAnd the little congregationPrayed for guidance from aboveLead us not into temptation,May his soul find the salvationOf thy great eternal loveRIP Jim Ed Brown

About SIX YEARS before this group made this song popular, a group of Students from Seale Hayne Agricultural College in Newton Abbot Devon sang this at The Rendevous Cafe in Newton Abbot, WITHOUT any musical accompaniment. The harmony was far superior to the Browns and we did not need music or guitar , just our own voices. There was a competition and the group was Dave, Robin, Colin and one other whose name I have lost for the present, came SECOND and the Winner was a single guy who sang "I believe". I have often wondered what would have become of us if we had actually won that night. Three of the names are Dave Berryman, who went to Australia I believe, Robin Leach, who joined an Agricultural Machinery Firm and Colin Thompsett( THat's ME) and I am farming at Abergavenny in Monmouthshire South Wales. I have lost contact with my friends and since I am now 83 I wonder if they are still alive. It would be marvelous if this message produced a reunion. Does anyone have any knowlege of the forgoing?

Il est difficile de reprendre le répertoire de Piaf sans être bien en dessous d'elle. Cette version est sympa, mais elle est sucrée et désuète, tendance country.
