Here is an incredibly rare gem from The Blossoms! How much rarer can you get? This song was recorded by the group in 1966 and produced by Jerry Riopel as part of a campaign to "correct the inequality in employment opportunities between whites and minorities including blacks in the U.S." Only a few thousand copies were dispersed to radio DJs at the time. The record I recorded it from is a reissue from Japan from 1992. It is backed with a Crystal's demo called Please Be My Boyfriend. Here is this rare Blossoms gem in it's entirety. Enjoy!

Is this Edna Wright on lead? (Darlene's sister from 1970s Honey Cone fame)

Yep... Jerry was a genius and Spector knew it. The only person who was truly taught by spector of his production secrets... cheers

I really enjoy this song, and I thank mhfanandssidirector for posting it and the Shindig photo. I have seen this photo before in Darlene's autobiography but wondered when it was taken....and by dumb luck I may have just figured it out! Look in youtube at the Blossoms - Down By the Riverside (thanks to nyrainbow2) from June 2, 1965 at 0:44....it's pretty close!

Interesting tale here - apparently Brian offered Phil "Don't Hurt My Little Sister", but changed his mind when Spector demanded a songwriting co-credit... then Phil cut this, and invited Brian to the session ! Thing is, according to Jerry Riopelle, he produced this version after Phil gave up on the song, so if he's right, not only is Brian not on it, but it's also not a Spector Production ! BTW, the same instrumental track was used for the versions by The Supremes and Jay & The Americans.

Yep this is not the usual front line you hear. Great to have Darlene Love on this version. Good find. However, Phil Spector didn't want to get involved with the Gov project or releases, so he put his main man on the job Jerry Riopelle as producer. Spector set up the original version that was shelved.
