it's to signal that they're leaving reality basically. To show they're thinking- and most of this show's numbers are concert style so it works.

@thatswhatsheread It's kind of late to reply to this and you might already know, but they do wear mikes. The handhelds don't actually work. There just to show that the characters have stepped out out of reality to preform the song.
