The fact that teenage girls were paying more attention to them than Christ is exactly what Lennon meant. He never said or implied that the Beatles were more important than Christ.He meant exactly the opposite...... that Christ is all important but the Beatles were only an unimportant a R&R band. ..Of course the religious zealots of the time took his comment completely out of context as religious zealots still do do today.

In 1966 The Beatles basically had two choices... continue doing what they had been doing, writing and recording simple 3 and 4 chord pop love songs and then performing them live for maniacal, screaming fans OR focus their time/energies on developing and expanding musically in the studio, recording increasingly elaborate and complex songs. They chose the latter. But given the limitations of the technology of the time, their studio wizardry could not possibly be reproduced live, even if they had wished to do so. But we can all be thankful that they chose studio work over touring, otherwise we wouldn't have Sgt. Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour or the White Album, and the world would today be a smaller, darker place.
