This song has everything,,starting with Rick....Garth sounds great and Robbie's solo is flat out awesome,,nobody played like Robbie,,But then again how many players goback to 1960...And how many bands go back to 1962 ?? When all 5 original joined Ronnie Hawkins... Very few !! During the birth of rock in roll...Also you have the Levon thunp,,a beat you can hear on ''The Bands'' classic ''The Weight'' A unique styleLevon invented,,just ask Levon's favorite drummer Jim Keltner and lastly how many singers does a band have the honor to have Richard Manuel as a back up vocalist.....Very few bands had the different voices that the band had and basically none couldblend harmonies like ''the band''

"The Saga of Pepote Rouge"From "Islands" (1977)*_____________________________*THE SAGA OF PEPOTE ROUGEThere's a legend of a lady on the mountainWho lives alone beyond the mecca plainAnd with her hands she makes it through the winterShe never goes against the grainTo be someone is to be someone aloneTo be someone is known as solitudeTo learn to sing below the surfaceYou must adjust your altitudeBreak the news, Pepote Rouge is coming to townWe stand accused, Pepote Rouge, of bein' hellboundShe had a vision, and now she holds the keyYou don't know what you want, 'til you find out what you need.I was stranded on the damn coast when a ladyCalled to me in a voice so soft and lowHer words resounded like a fountain of truthAnd then she faded like a rainbowHer golden spaceship with the mother of the earthCarved in stone, the queen of avatarsWhere seventy children were given birthShe then returned back to the starsBreak the news, Pepote Rouge is coming to townWe stand accused, Pepote Rouge, of bein' hellboundShe can help us find our way and get acrossYou don't know what you gained 'til you find out what you lost.Pepote Rouge come down from the mountainAnd lead our people into the light of dayFor they are lost and know not where they're goin'And all their leaders are cast in clayNow disbelief and mass confusionSpreading wild across the landYou can call it love or call it wisdomTo be not savin' a drowning man.Break the news, Pepote Rouge is coming to townWe stand accused, Pepote Rouge, of bein' hellboundShe can show us just where we went wrongYou don't know where you're goin' 'til you find where you belong.#theband

Never get tired of this song. Some great wisdom:"To be someone is to be someone aloneTo be someone is known as solitude".

Originally it was packaged (inside the shrinkwrap, of course) around the outside of the cover, so you saw Richard and Garth next to the track and personnel listing, and you saw the rest of the guys when you turned the album over. My framed copy still has the "fold" or "crease" in it.

It's Elliott Landy's original sepia-toned photo for the cover of the STAGE FRIGHT LP. Photographed in Woodstock, it was a removable wraparound; underneath it was the familiar color-spectrum cover we know and love today. The removable photo was suitable for framing, and my original from 1971 is still on my wall today. -)

"Northern lights is also my favorite" I worked in records in the 70s...radio stations ignored their last two albums, "Northern light" and 'Islands" which this song is taken from..these two albums are by far their best...go buy them

It's the gatefold inside the Stage Fright album if memory serves. (Thought I'd check to make sure . . . Yep. I remembered right! – I tried including the location of the info, but it won't let me.) Thanks for posting.

A frickin' great short sci-fi-ish art film could be made from the plot of this song. My favorite by The Band, next to "Jupiter Hollow", "King Harvest" and "Acadian Driftwood"
