This is from the unreleased Tombstone album sometime in the late 80's.The Band recorded a full album of songs with Jules Shear co-wrting or writing the bulk of it and singing lead on the bulk of it. The record company rejected it and sent them back to the drawing board, finally regrouping with Jericho a couple of years later, with Levon Helm front and center on most of it. Interesting, Levon sings on one, maybe two songs on Tombstone…..11 years ago

No way! I had no idea they did their own version of this! This is (co-writer) Jules Shear on a guest lead, apparently. (For those that don't know, this was written by Shear and Rick Danko of The Band.) Fans of this song should hear the version on Shear's album Healing Bones. For one, he sings much better on it. There's orchestra (including a prelude), yet also a cleaner aspect to the lower register (piano + bass can lead to muddiness). It has a majestic slowness to it.13 years ago
