The Association - "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" from Renaissance (1967)

Music / lyrics by Jules Alexander

I have walked along the paths of dark and light

And I have seen the sunrise and I've seen the night

I've seen the calm before the storm and then the fight

And now I see the sparrows as they begin to fly

And all that's left for me to do

Is cry

I've had my view of happiness and my view of despair

I've cleaned out all the cobwebs and I've learned how to compare

I've seen all of the circles and I've had my last affair

And now I see the sparrows as they begin to fly

And all that's left for me to do

Is cry

Thinking that I was lost then finding the end to all beginnings

Gave to me the key made of lead and golden

Freeing locks, Pandora's boxes, devils are expended

And I'm finally free

And when all the tears are finally cried

And I am finally clean inside

The gentle winds will come and they will dry my mind

And I will see the sparrow that need no longer fly

And all that will be left for me to do

Is die

Steph, I will give you the fact this is a very different style for the Association. It was their attempt to fit in with the "flower power" theme of the day. They did it with Along Comes Mary and here was a second attempt. I love it but then I did from the very beginning. Yes, they were a little too polished for the era but their writing and harmonies were superb! They bridged the musical gap between 40s and 50s style of music and the revolutionary music of the 60s. That's one reason why I love this song so much. It kinda did that.

On this day in 1966 {December 18th} "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" by the Association peaked at #35 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had entered the chart on November 20th and spent 7 weeks on the Top 100...Between 1966 and 1981 the sextet had thirteen Top 100 records; with four Top 10 hits, and two #1s {"Cherish" for 3 weeks in 1966 and "Windy" for 4 weeks in 1967}...

The "single" version, which appears as a "bonus track" on the expanded re-issue, is nothing more than the same song slowed down a bit.

If they ever performed it live, it could have been done slower, but on stage bands have a tendency to uptempo everything, even slow ballads (it's also easier on the vocal abilities I guess). Anyway, I couldn't find a live Pandora. One could try with slowing down the YT of the studio version. Although I think it won't be the same. One of the Association antholgy CD's (can't find it right now, I think it's a 'hidden' bonus) features a backup-only track, rich instrumentation, very nice.

listening now, for the first time I'm hearing what you mean! a slightly slower tempo allowing time for the dense harmonies and complex melody to sink in and make their full impact.

It actually reached # 35 on the Billboard chart--which is how I know of it. I'd known the title long before I'd heard of the song. Thanks, Bryan Reynolds, for posting it.

Jules AKA Gary Alexander, I presume — he wrote the tune

Interesting in this context to point out that this song prompted Timothy Leary to say that, " [The Association] was a major contributor to the spiritual awareness of the youth of the day."

I always felt they played this one a bit too fast... A pity it never became a hit, it's such powerful song.
