Эрни, который всю жизнь пел псалмы и христианские гимны? Как если бы, к примеру, Кобзон вдруг решил «Где-то далеко...» спеть в духе «Хава Нагила», — задорно и с подтанцовками.Выглядит форменным издевательством над смыслом. А ведь текст очень серьезен, и даже трагичен, и не предполагает такого откровенного глумления над ним. Ведь «Sixteen Tons», по сути, — песня довольно мрачная в своей безысходности, — о суровом «гномике» из Кентукки, обреченном всю жизнь рубить уголёк в вечном сумраке, пока не сдохнет, — от «черной» чахотки (Black Lung) или под завалом. He did actually record this version on to a 7", which is what he is miming to. My dad had it, gave it to me and someone stole it from my record box. I see a lot of people don't much like this, but it is a real piece of its time, very bizarre and I have loved it since I was a kid. Luckily I kept a digital copy of the record, but would love to track it down again. There is also a similar reversion of Shake Rattle and Roll by Big Joe Turner, which I love to bits.

I remember when he recorded that . I was 7. I just got through educating a snot nosed kid what will happen if his generation doesn't start thinking in self sufficiency mode instead of how they are now. I told him if they didn't get their heads on right that they would all be working for a multi national corporation like Samsung, Toyota, or worse. He came back with "what's wrong with working for Samsung?" I had to try and bring my 65 years down where a 17 year old would understand it. I used "me" for the corporation and explained what it would be like living in an economic vacuum. I finally got him to understand that if everyone worked for me, that I could pay them whatever I wanted. I would therefore own the stores, and basically their life. I thought about this song and told him to listen to it. It's the first time I've heard it in years. I forgot how powerful Ernie Ford's voice was. It's like you are hearing something stronger than man.

Ford died on October 17th 1991.Tennessee Ernie Ford - 16 Tons (1956) "Sixteen Tons" is a song about the life of a coal miner, first recorded in 1946 by American country singer Merle Travis and released on his box set album Folk Songs of the Hills the following year. A 1955 version recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford reached number one in the Billboard charts, while another version by Frankie Laine was released only in Western Europe, where it gave Ford's version competition.While the song is usually attributed to Merle Travis, to whom it is credited on his 1946 recording, George S. Davis, a folk singer and songwriter who had been a Kentucky coal miner, claimed on a 1966 recording for Folkways Records to have written the song as "Nine-to-ten tons" in the 1930s. Davis' recording of his version of the song appears on the albums George Davis: When Kentucky Had No Union Men and Classic Mountain Songs from Smithsonian.According to Travis, the line from the chorus, "another day older and deeper in debt", was a phrase often used by his father, a coal miner himself. This and the line, "I owe my soul to the company store", is a reference to the truck system and to debt bondage. Under this scrip system, workers were not paid cash; rather they were paid with non-transferable credit vouchers which could be exchanged only for goods sold at the company store. This made it impossible for workers to store up cash savings. Workers also usually lived in company-owned dormitories or houses, the rent for which was automatically deducted from their pay.
