A b-side song from the "I Might Be Crying" single from 1995. The song is Tanita's interpretation of Stevie Smith's poem "Not Waving but Drowning".

Nobody heard him, the dead man,

But still he lay moaning:

I was much further out than you thought

And not waving but drowning.

Poor man, he always loved larking

And now he's dead

It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,

They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always

(Still the dead one lay moaning)

I was much too far out all my life

And not waving but drowning.

I have been looking for this for over a decade! My AP English Lit. teacher played a live version of this song being performed by Tanita Tikaram...I think. I remember it was a woman playing a guitar...again I think. This was around 1997 and it was on a VCR tape that my teacher recorded. ANYWAY, thank you so much. This is one of the very first poems that spoke to me in such an intimate way, and the song is so perfect.

braathens75 you are awesome. thank you a million times over for putting this up at (possibly) my request (?). i so love this song so much. I realise it is from the poem, but i love this version so much, rather than just being read. in my opinion it puts more feeling in it. but then maybe i am just biased as i heard this first, so once more, many, many thanks.
