Born May 17, 1942Musical style (From Wiki)Taj Mahal leads with his thumb and middle finger when fingerpicking, rather than with his index finger as the majority of guitar players do. "I play with a flatpick," he says, "when I do a lot of blues leads."[Early in his musical career Mahal studied the various styles of his favorite blues singers, including musicians like Jimmy Reed, Son House, Sleepy John Estes, Big Mama Thornton, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi John Hurt, and Sonny Terry. He describes his hanging out at clubs like Club 47 in Massachusetts and Ash Grove in Los Angeles as "basic building blocks in the development of his music."]Considered to be a scholar of blues music, his studies of ethnomusicology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst would come to introduce him further to the folk music of the Caribbean and West Africa. Over time he incorporated more and more African roots music into his musical palette, embracing elements of reggae, calypso, jazz, zydeco, rhythm and blues, gospel music, and the country blues—each of which having "served as the foundation of his unique sound."[4] According to The Rough Guide to Rock, "It has been said that Taj Mahal was one of the first major artists, if not the very first one, to pursue the possibilities of world music. Fishin' BluesGood heavens! I have an urge that I've resisted successfully for many years. I admit I did back slide once or twice, both times my son Justin Ian figures into it. Hard water fishing. Ice fishing is fine and dandy when you are a young fellow and passion burns hot enough to keep the ears, feet and fingers warm standing on ice for hours on end. Now bear in mind I'm talking old school ice fishing, no ice augers with motors or hand operated. I had a chisel, the kind that fit into a hardy hole on a black smith's vice and used for bending hot metal into various shapes. The one I own is for bending 90 degree angles and it is heavy, very good for chipping holes in ice. Perhaps you can see why I have resisted ice fishing for so long. I find it awesome that listening to music can evoke so many different memories. It's is too bad that it is impossible for music to be used like a sine wave to carry basic educational instruction into our brains, instead of learning by rote and rule.

We are making great headway in our efforts to nominate Taj Mahal for a prestigious Kennedy Center award.Thanks to all who have already filled out the nomination form (at the link on my Tj Wheeler FB original post.) I really appreciate those who when doing sending me back a simple "Done" comment / reply, as it informs me what progress we're making. My friend Nigel informed me that he believes decisions for 2014 will be made in early Sept. That does not give us a whole lot of time for this particular year, but let us do our utmost anyway. I don't think I've ever asked anyone to "share" or forward a post or e mail before, but in this case. I certainly am.PLEASE C&P this to your e mail list, Blues roots radio DJ's /audiences, newspapers. prominent politicians, community leaders, music writers, actors etc I'm definitely think it would be incredibly helpful.
