Trying to learn this song on guitar. The chords are simple, but the phrasing is difficult as hell. I'm realizing how Syd's genius in songwriting worked... There are emphases in his vocals that are not "signaled" by any emphasis in the guitar line. Most music, in my limited experience, "cues" changes in the other instruments, especially vocals... It's almost like playing two different songs at the same time in some spots. Then in other spots the changes are right with the words/beat, like you'd expect.Musicians, is this what is meant by "syncopation"?And I've not even mentioned the strumming pattern and chord changes at unexpected points in the vocal line. All of this creates an effect I'd call "emotional" -- I think maybe it's how really good songs are able to hit the listener right in the heart while only using the same notes and chords as every other song. It's going to take a lot of practice for such a "simple" song.

No. He was suffering from mental illness. He self medicated and eventually crashed all the way back from where he came from. Nothing glamorous although his band mates made millions off of his crack up. Eventually from I what I've read they did see right by him. In 2006 Syd died of cancer. That's about it. No messiah here. Talent yes. Let's move along.

This is Syd's nostalgic dedication to Pink Floyd when he was dropped out from the band. Madcap Laughs, a legendary album!
