My name is Mike Bean. Anyone who knows me long enough will know one of my favorite alternative rock bands is Switchfoot. They are a band from San Diego, CA. who grew up surfing & going to school together. They also assemble together to worship God with their local Church body. Yes, all the members of the group are Christian. However, though they consider themselves Christian's who happen to be in a band, they don't see themselves as a Christian band. Their messy spiritual, messy faith, messy theology, messy Christianity, messy discipleship bleeds through from their music in a non-religious sort of way. Switchfoot is sort of more like a modern surf-boy-band version of my parents Beach Boys. Though I can't technically be justified in comparing them to such a legendary band. That said, I still think these guys are pretty rad. According to band members the song "Saltwater Heart" came together in the magical island of Bali. They were traveling the world, chasing waves together & many new songs like it came together. Saltwater Heart was really the fault of a cliff overlooking the Indian ocean. It was inspired by the surroundings. This song is a reflection of that feeling of being on the edge of the earth. Saltwater Heart is also a song about longing. When you are feeling far from home, you feel brittle & thirsty for substance. Far from shore, far from home, way from people you know & love, away from civilization- the ink dries up, & the blood begins to clot. You begin to feel like a sojourner longing for home, wanting to be washed clean of the dust of travel. And yet there is a deeper longing. A spiritual longing that no physical location can give you- not even your hometown. A longing to have a clean heart & soulful rest. Saltwater Heart is a song that is trying to speak to both of these longings at once: longings of your physical being to be at home in comfort & the longings of your soul to be at home in Jesus Christ.
