"Play All Night" still at the demo stage with Brian Connolly taking the lead vocal. By the time the finished song appeared on the "Cut Above The Rest" album Brian had left the band and Andy Scott was singing lead vocals on the track. Andy says that nearly everyone had a go at it before they settled on the final version. Here's how it could have sounded though.

I saw Sweet open for Cheap Trick on this tour. Even though Brian was gone, they rocked the house. One of the best shows I have ever seen to this day.

You are right, Andy was the highest pitched and Motley Crue upon their own confession took a lot of influence from Sweet.

They should have just taken a year break, and gotten Brian straightened out. Any group with a charismatic lead man like Brian is slitting their own throats when they axe them. If it doesn't kill the group outright it does tend to split the fan base into two groups. I remember when Van Halen became Van Hagar. Most of my buddies stopped listening to them. Of course the reunion was like a gift from God.

I agree. They should've 'cleaned Brian up!' (If that's the way you want to put it). Everyone should have rallied around (or were they blind or didn't care enough about him?). When I think about it - I can't bear that no-one tried to help him. I wish I'd have met him - it hurts me to think that I never did. Although, finding out about his father (that wasn't) may have had an effect on him psychologically (he was 18?) . I don't think he realised just how special and loved he was.

Oh yes, it is a mystery that they didn't keep this leadversion.

They all had a high ranges but Brian. Andy I think was the highest pitched. This song reminds me of Mötley Crüe

Andy was the one who hit the really high notes, But yes Steve had a high range too.

Whether it was sung by Andy or Brian, no matter the direction the band was heading, "Play All Night" should have been the lead off single for Cut Above The Rest instead of "Call Me". This had a catchy sing along chorus, it was short enough, and was lighthearted and fun, which is what the public wanted to hear from Sweet.

If they'd had decent management Brian would have been put in rehab and cleaned up (as an investment if nothing more). I met him quite a few times in the period after he left band and know it would not have been possible to work with him (his problems were too far gone) although he was always hospitable and a nice guy deep down. They made some good songs after he went but none of them was a front-man. Maybe they should have got a new lead singer? Or cleaned Brian up like I said, better still.

I think if the Sweet guys would have known what would happen to them at the time for canning Brian Connolly, I think they would have just stuck it out and kept him in the band. They probably would have had at least a couple of more hit singles and have remained in the public consciousness for a couple of years more. Certainly a lot better than going it alone with just the remaining three!

I think it was recorded in the end of 1978. Then BRİAN left the band and Andy sang this song on the CUT ABOVE THE REST ALBUM. But I think everyting was better however BRİAN was a excellent rock singer. All the same all we Sweet fans still miss and love them.
