Swans were an influential American rock, experimental and post-industrial band active from 1982 to 1997, led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira.
Swans were one of the few groups to emerge from the New York No Wave scene intact. The band was formed in 1982 by Michael Gira, and employed a shifting lineup of musicians until their dissolution in 1997. Besides Gira, the only other semi-constant members were keyboardist/vocalist Jarboe, and, to an extent, guitarist Norman Westberg.

I will defend the songwriter and say that line " Love will save you .. but it wont save me" is not shallow at all. I see this in a different view ; "You" is here a future self that is going to live further and "Me" is here the past self that will die in the moment of realization of his own inability to love (aka to live ) further. "Me" can not be seen as an absolute out of time object that can say absolute things...( it is anachronic and unwit philosophy to consider time and identity in a such a rigid way) ....Furthermore the so called "absolute logic" language is destroyer of minds, lives.... But you can watch the song in an even different point of view : you can say that songwriter is really in this moment of self pity BUT that is nothing wrong with it! It is a equally good or bad state of a body like every other.. It is the stance toward this state that is more important then some hierachy of good emotions or bad emo..... So conclusion : the lyrics are NOT shallow at all.. ( i mean I heard a lot but this..)10 years ago

i heard this on 99x radio station in 1994. i still love it! this mix of beauty and despair tears at the soul. It leaves me with exhilaration but wondering how to figure it all out. It seems dangerous to drive with this song , but that's where i heard it first. Went to Little Five Points in Atlanta the next day and bought the album.11 years ago
