These versions did the original songs justice, no doubt.

My one complaint about the Black Flag album My War was that it didn't have more long slow songs on it, a friend turned my on to swans and here I am.

I was just listening to Big Black and my mom came in. She didn't even ask me to turn it down or give me a look of disapproval. I just want someone to yell "turn that shit down!" once in my life so i can say "you just don't understand man". That's why I'm here. Swans is my only hope

The most important thing here is the "spirit" that we can't find anymore. Fucking brutal!

god i love this video so much. I always return when I'm in the mood for sheer brutality of sound straight from the gut.

My biggest problem with the Greed/Holy Money material is that the live versions are 15,000x better.... the album tracks sound kind of neutered and thin compared to the stuff like this VHS and Public Castration.

It's me, or Tool and Maynard James Keenan have a sound and performance influence from Swans?

Much love and respect for those that got to see swans at this stage.... i was 14 and had no clue about shit when these beautiful sounds were being made... Swans never disappoint and i have had my share making up for lost time... Norm hope to shake your hand someday and thank you......

1986. Soon after this Ted Parsons (one of the drummers) left to join Prong.

Couldn't agree with you more! They were all on my turntable....am glad you mentioned The Fall too, 'Slates' is a masterpiece, it makes a whole period seem alive.

Please do, so I can see which ones I like, don't like, and/or have never heard/of (I'm an 80's/'old-MTV/NewWave fanatic)

TG and Joy Division started in the 70's. But yeah nothing wrong with the 80's, I'm sure he or she was referring to the mainstream top 40 type music from back then.

I agree with you there were thousands of great groups, sadly 99% of them were outside of the mainstream, marginalised and pigeon holed under the banner of 'indie'. Their exposure, outside of on John Peel, was very rare and a prized event. I am not slagging off this vibrant scene at all, but rather, the corporate manufactured mediocrity that held sway. I mean to say; would you really love to listen to the entire S.A.W. back catalogue followed by some HiNRG?! I thought as much.
