There was no guitar music in the british mainstream back then. Apart from maybe Guns and Roses! The 80s had been dominated by pop. Then Suede came along. And then Blur/Oasis and blew the industry apart. Hence the shocked faces!

I saw this too, it didn't make me a super massive fan and I'm still not. But I do like and respect them. And I think this opened me up to the idea that songs could and should really be art. I never listened to chart music again after this. The strange thing is that most of the people in the audience were probably punk prog or rock fans back in the 70's they just hadn't heard really music for about 10 years. RIP Phil Collins and Simply Red...

Suede just managed to let an entire crowd of snobby music industry yuppies who thought that manufactured music was the future know that guitar rock was back in motherfucking business.

I remember this. Its hard to gauge the impact now, but the audience full of industry suits were visibly stunned. The Brits were a shameless back-slapping fest of award giving to the most obvious of candidates. Acts tended to be of the 'Celine Dion' variety booked so as not to 'Frighten the Horses'. Acts never played live, giving polished 'recording perfect' predictable performances. Brett Anderson slapping his arse with a mic & goading them like an angry Bowie was more than they bargained for.

on this night young children, suede kicked ass and destroyed the old status quo in favor of something new. rock n' roll w/ an edge and passion.
