NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Hickory 1144) Out of Nashville, this disc from June 1961 is the debut single by Miss Thompson on Hickory Records after her departure from Mercury. It unfortunately did not chart and it wasn't until the following release, 'Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)' also from 1961 that she would have a hit. 'Angel, Angel' is a lush, country/pop number that not surprisingly sounds very much like the tracks on Roy Orbison's first two Monument LP's. The same session musicians were used as well as the same background vocalists, 'The Anita Kerr Singers' and the same recording studio, RCA Victor Studio B.

I so agree with you John. What really grabs me with this track is the big, marvelous sound that was achieved within RCA studio B in Nashville. The crisp, sound and distinct presentation of every element of the recording. I can almost hear the horsehair of the bows gliding across the violin strings and the perfect echo chamber. Beautiful.

I wish that Sue Thompson had done more of this type of traditional ballad as opposed to the quaint sort of novelty song she did so much of. I have a bunch of her Hickory 45s but--not this one and certainly none with her inscription! Very nice Anthony.

I thought I knew the voice-now I know why! thanks for reminding me of the song about sad movies. Today you'd have to write about awful movies, since that's all Hollywood has turned out in the last 10 years.
