I never seen the problem with the finished version of Strawberry Fields. There's so many takes and demos, but that finished take is the KILLER one. Johns voice sounds the best and the quality of the recording was the best.But...I could be wrong.

No, he's right. John wanted them to combine the two takes and they thought it was impossible, but Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick managed to pull it off. No one said he was a perfect person, he was flawed as we all are, but let's give credit where credit is due.

he hated his own voice and would try anything to make it sound different, vari speed, feeding it through a Leslie Speaker, placing the microphone inside a bottle of water and singing into it. Listen to I Am The Walrus his voice has been shifted a good couple of semitones and is covered in a very short delay causing a flanging sound. He had an amazing voice it's wonderful to listen to demos and early takes like this :)

It's amazing how this song took so long to put together, but each incarnation gets better. :-)

Wrong. U must think Lennon was faultless and could do no mistake. When really, while being a musical genius, also later (after meeting Yoko Uck Ono) behaved like a spoiled, irresponsible teenage boy, leaving behind his family and being basically a prick to evryone except that dreaded woman.... I never read or heard any THANK YOU to George Martin, for elevating his beautiful but rather simple demos (here, Tomorrow never knows, A day in the life) into the masterpieces they ARE.

Maybe the pinnacle of all music.

Indeed, it is great to hear how their music evolved from conception to delivery. John retracted many of the things he said about Martin, McCartney and The Beatles once he got a little distance.

@Kaalec YES, I love these earlier studio " takes " working toward the polished album version. However, even in that, some of the earlier takes seemed better than the finished product ! Its wonderful to still have these to listen to. And yes, hats off to George Martin for giving The Beatles a chance and working so well with them ( even John ) !!

@124slowhand It was Lennon who wanted to combine one take with another when they were recorded in different keys. Martin had to slow the higher key down to match the lower key. That's what gave it that odd dreamy quality. And Lennon approved it. Lennon said a lot of disparaging things about The Beatles and Martin after the split. The truth is without George Martin, there have been no Revolver, Ribber Soul or Sgt. Peppers.
