Artistic opinion and conjecture aside, no one has done more than Sting to bring this timeless music and poetry into the modern mainstream.

We're not used to hearing these things sung like this, because we're used to professional performances by classically trained singers, but perhaps for the first few centuries of their life listeners would have been more likely to hear them a bit like this than from specialists.

Sting! Stick a fork in yourself—you're done. This is a most disgustingly poor performance.

Karamazov sounds as though he's playing with barbed wire on the end of his fingers, and there are a huge number of mistakes. Sting is breathing in all the wrong places. Ugly, crude and horrible.

I wish sting would f*** off attempting Dowland - it's just horrible.

@kchlup the thing is that vocal technique is for the benefit and health of any singer, to learn how to breath properly, how to sing with a raised palate and a low larynx, etc I think it's more of a matter of health and how to use the instrument, more than a matter of singing classical vs popular. I think.

@kchlup the low notes are the problem I think... plus his voice is a bit raspy, and that doesn't sound very healthy to me....

I had a go at updating Dowland myself earning a slightly stuffy response from those in the classical world but entertaining those in blues world. Enjoyed myself, learned a lot and still love listening the original pieces played by early music buffs. If you're interested in my attempts on blues slide guitar then go to my carsickphil channel and see what you think. There's a version of Mr Dowland's Midnight and Orlando Sleepeth available among my videos.
