For those saying Neeley is better you have to remember most of the videos I've seen of Neeley doing this are from the actual show where he's in character and the crowd(and cast) is in it too. This guy is singing 1 song at an awards show where the people are stuffing their faces. This version is damn good.

We've all seen his 2004 version from Holland right? That's WAY better than this one. I feel like they told him to hold back on the power notes because of the crowd he was performing for. Because for those of us that have seen the 2004 version, we know how he REALLY sings this.

I don't understand why people always have to compare the different versions of this. If something is good, it is good. It doesn't become less good because someone else sang it differently or better. To say "I prefer..." is fair enough but saying "x is better" means that you are always labelling the other as a loser. This is an incredibly difficult song to sing, whatever the style. As somebody pointed out, JCS is a "rock opera". Although they were posting to suggest it should be more rock, that description would actually suggest that it is perfectly acceptable to sing this with a rock style OR a more operatic/musical style.

I like all of the JCS singers but since a Deep Purple singer did it first everyone has a comment about how well a rock/theatre/actor/etc singer sings it better. Even funnier is how Andrew Weber says so and so is his favorite! He doesn't like Ian Gillan so "rock stars" or "pop singers" are no good, "I've worked with the best", and all of that rot. I am amused. Thing is, Andy made a lot of dough selling his wares through the years and all of the other talent made a living too. Andy for sure can't sing it, and in this case Ian Gillan sang it first so his phrasing, timing and emotion is what everyone heard first back before there was any other version. That'll bee what the newer guys will be judged against, or at least referenced against, though I think Balsamo is a good singer for sure. I don't like his timing and phrasing. It must've been the way ALW liked it...

I always wait for the high "neeley screams" and they aren't in :(. Great use of falsetto (but definitely out of his "comfort zone"). Neeley sounds like an angry jesus. Steve sounds like a jesus that is afraid and "soft".

I don't know. A number of people talked this up as so amazing, wonderful, etc. etc. So, I closed my eyes, put my head back and just listened. Sadly, from the beginning and right the way through, my repeated thought was, he's got an ok voice, but he's just singing this horribly. And after listening to this twice, That IS my overall reaction. His voice is good, he can slip into an amazing falsetto for the high note, but somehow, the phrasing, and almost excessive "musicality", to me, don't suit this piece of music. Hearing it literally makes me cringe, which makes me sad. And he keeps pronouncing "ask" as if the word is "osk" which is unbelievably jarring (and not the only affected pronunciation in the performance). No, even though his voice is, underneath the vocal affectation, better than Neely's, he cannot hold a candle to Neely or Gillan in terms of performance.I guess it depends on who you heard sing it first, and whether you prefer a "rock" or a "Broadway" style for the performance. This is what I think of as a "Broadway musical" style, which I think is not a good interpretation of the music- it WAS written as a "rock opera", after all. Just my personal reaction, no offense intended to anyone who likes it.

I don't think anybody, not even Ted Neally ever beat Ian Gillan in singing this song.

This was absolutely beautiful. It brought me to tears. I'd love to see his whole performance. Ted is great but Steve has put so much passion into his rendition. And, as stated this wasn't even in character during the play but at an awards show. His rendition is so spot on, plus he's very good looking and I'd love to feel his beautiful hair! I'm on a hunt for more!
