over the hills and valleys, and through the fields, but it is the black and yellow, and black and white dogs the narrator notices. and the hare gets his last words. maybe a vaguely regretful tone to the song?

Absolutely one of the best songs from one of the best collections of British folk songs ever assembled. And as themountainviewguy suggested, when my friends and I get pretty intoxicated, we can do what sounds to us like a pretty good rendition of this. No recordings exist to fault this. :-) Thanks for posting Hark, WhackaWhacka!

(suite) to me,HARK THE VILLAGE WAIT is the hidden british , only LIEGE AND LIEF by Fairport Convention and the singing goddess Sandy Denny can compare on the Pop/Folk genre, , but HARK is the best.
