What a bunch of little faggots who probly wrote/recorded this song in the five minuets they could bare to get their fingers out of little girls nickers

Just having a Youtube Steeleye Span morning while I do other stuff on the pc. Not going to enter into any arguments about "Whose version is best"... just love the simplicity of this one. Beautiful.

Why all the complaints that it's not as good as other versions? It's folk music! You're not supposed to do it the same way as the last guy!

I don't think it a completely different song - if we look say at Fairport's Tam Lin and Anne Briggs' Young Tambling I'd think them both variations on a theme, which is a common thing in folk music, as variations, for want of a better word, start to speciate. Another example - Fairport's Matty Groves and Jerry and Dawg's Shady Grove. Nothing about Lords and Ladies in the US version, but listen to the two looking for resemblances rather than differences. They are there, I think in all. David B

Surely the Graham/Collins Hares on a Mountain is a completely different song that happens to have the same name, not a different version of the same song? I might agree that this is not Steeleye Span's most inspiring release though.

@daithesceptic Twaddle. Utter and complete twaddle. I just put up with the entirety of Liege & Lief. Listened to it for free & I want my money and time back. Put Fairport's Tam Lin up against Steeleye Span's Tam Lin any day of the week and see who wins. Fairport's sounds like elevator music by comparison. Unhalfbricking? Not any better. I keep waiting for something interesting, but it's like the same song over and over again 7 times... Ugh. There's nothing bold or different there. BO-OOOOORING!

@MCshlthead A highly literate and effective refutation of my comment. Sadly, last I looked, the Graham/Collins version had been taken down. David B

Seems very twee and pretentious compared to the Davy Graham/Shirley Collins version to me. they did some quite nice stuff, but Steeleye always seemed to me a pretty pale shadow of Pentangle or Fairport. This not among their proudest moments for me. David B
