@jat13 Well put. The enz did achieve alot more than early Genesis did. Genny didn't know if they wanted 2 be Procol Harum,Yes,or King Crimso or all three at once! early on GEN was much more into instrumental passages than the song. the Enz were great musicians who played it out arrangement wise. they were similar to the beatles and the move in this way. they served the song/melody not the otherway around.

@kristoscan As far as I'm concerned, Split Enz achieved with 'Mental Notes' what genesis were trying to do for 7 years and quite got there. The songs feel so much more complete than the fragmented stuff Genesis produced. But don't get me wrong, I think Genesis were still great!

Didn't know the Mac/Giles influence. I always thought Tim a natch to front King Crimson reunion setup. the classical thing i did know cuz of miles. wally def has the whole floyd gilmour DSOTM thing. Mac/Giles'70 is a better follow up than 'In the wake of posedian by Crimso, IMO.

@kristoscan Phil and Tim both admit to being influenced by McDonald & Giles (early King Crimson spinoff) and there was a strong influence from classical music, particularly inspired by violinist and early member Miles Golding, that brought on a 'proggy' feel that was not necessarily modeled after the British groups. Floyd's a good comparison here for sure. The lead guitar by Wally Wilkinson sounds very Dave Gilmour/Dark Side of the Moon. I've wondered if Wilkinson has ever cited that influence

They deny strongly any real Genesis proggy influences but i disagree. Like a weird Floyd B side! Awesome. Wish they woulda of stayed w/ this sound.

What year did this come out? I don't remember it... but I do remember my Kiwi GF taking me to see them in about 79 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. They were so good live.

hespete, THANK YOU for answering a question that has been nagging at me ever since seeing this stunning performance!! IMHO Phil's version wipes the floor with the version Tim did later.

Found it! I'm Spellbound... THE version of Split Enz. I loved Finn AND Judd. I'll never forget that '76 Jack The Lad tour when we met the band at Leeds and Bradford. Happy Daze. Tj Sundown

You can get Mental Notes and Second Thoughts, the two albums with Phil Judd, on Amazon. Fairly cheaply, too.

A different (and in my opinion a better) earlier version of the song was recorded in 1974 (appearing on "The Beginning of the Enz" retrospective album) with Tim Finn on vocals and with Robert Gillies' saxophone accompanyment.
