A terrific tune, and an indicator of the direction music would take throughout the 1980s. I miss that decade.

My brothers and I were glued to the t.v. set watching this performance on "Fridays". Great performance. Great song. Great band. This song still gets played on my guitar all the time. Neil Finn is a musical genius. And then came Crowded House. Eddie Rayner, though never officially a member played many times with Neil in Crowded House.

I remember this and the Solid Gold performance....but the keyboard kills in this song....

I love them, my sister turned me on to them years ago. one of my faves EVER! between dizrythmia, true colors, and time and tide, you have a collection that is basically unsurpassed in most decades. then the top songs from other albums (history never repeats is awesome), and message to my girl. truly a timeless band that wasn't afraid to let their freak flag fly, with pop melodies keeping it all together.

I think we're just split on our semantics. Yes, I realize this is Split Enz's song. What I meant is that they were performing their song live instead of merely lip-syncing on camera to a pre-recorded track. In essence, covering their own composition in real time, before a live studio audience. "Fridays" was a bit of a prime time broadcast pioneer in that regard. And yes, they're awesome.

Amen to that! Eddie Raynor was the bomb when it came to keys, hands down (pun intended)! Neil's lyrics and songwriting are amongst the most genious that there ever was, back then and now. Noel Crombie was a genious on his own making for the band... costumes, hairstyles, percussion! Add it all up, and you have got one freakin helluva band!!

this is not a live cover, it IS Split Enz's song... and live, they are awesome!

I LOVE this song. But it's weird - the keyboard part underlaying the verses sounds EXACTLY like the noise my cat makes before he pukes!

For a live cover, this was spot-on!

@joh2 Yep, by this point, they and Tim Finn were the only original members left (Neil didn't join right away).

The keyboardist, Eddie Rayner, certainly was a driving force behind Split Enz's overall sound, as was the bloke with the shaker, Noel Crombie, who was responsible for the band's overall image...

this kicks it. the keyboardist is the secret weapon to this band, amongst the fine songwriting, he is very talented. you can see my eyes and tell that i'm not lying
