A fresh addition to the Anjunadeep stable, the highly regarded Belgian pairing of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet, aka Spirit Catcher, make a bold entrance with the brilliant "Black Pitch EP".

Having graced seminal labels 2020Vision, Moodmusic and Freerange over their 10 year career, Spirit Catcher have continued to push a deep, funk-informed groove. Incorporating melodic 80s vibes and modern electronic influences, the "Black Pitch EP" showcases their dynamic sound at its finest.

Setting the tone perfectly, title track "Black Pitch" comes straight out of the blocks with a dark, immersive baseline, before delicate melodies and rising pads combine for a swirling crescendo - tied together with an infectious vocal hook.

With hallmarks of a classic house track, "Vintage Point" teases a rising techno-influenced groove and builds to a discordant climax.

Taking things deeper still,  "Miss U Right Now" rounds off the EP. Crisp percussion and a rolling groove lay the foundation for a slow burning jam, complete with hypnotic bass stabs and another spoken word refrain.

a pitched down (or up! no discrimination) of rob swire's vox for ghost and stuff on this would make a mad crossover.

I like the new direction Anjunadeep is taking, but I am sure gonna miss the progressive sounds that Anjunadeep/beats once had. Doesn't seem like they have much of that anymore.

I agree with this. I always look forward to the Anjunadeep albums more than the Anjunabeats ones which have become very disappointing recently.

This argument with trance music could have even occurred during what could be considered it's best state.. I know many classic trance tracks which were influenced by many other genres and that is clear when you hear the tracks.. but no one really complained then as much as people do now. People want producers to make tracks within the bracket of genres and not experiment or help music in general evolve.

there is no such thing as brostep -_- we don't need a new genre category for every subtle difference, hence why trance is still called trance nowadays even though it may not be as it once was. you are not in any position to explain why producers make the style of music they do... they have their reasons which I assume for most producers isn't envolved with "going mainstream". Producers get bored of essentially re-creating the same shit all the time...

This entire EP is a light in an otherwise dark commercial trance tunnel today. Getting back to the old school!

Also, I don't think the pure trance sound of today is at all like anything released years back and pure trance doesn't have be fast paced. I'm not really talking about that uplifting stuff from artists like John O'Callaghan, etc. I'm talking stuff from the likes of John 00 Fleming, Airwave, Art of Trance, Union Jack, etc. That's as pure as trance gets.

I think what many pure trance fans such as myself think is that creating new styles and genres is all well and good, but the new sound that trance has apparently 'evolved' into is just not trance. It is something of a hybrid of trance and electro house (occasionally brostep too). It is an attempt to go mainstream with the new 'edm' craze. Again, that's fine, but I don't think it should be labelled as trance music. Trance doesn't need to evolve into electro-trance or trouse or whatever.

Not many trance producers produce the same style of trance that was around years ago.. people get bored of the same thing.. I'm a huge fan of trance music and welcome the change.. I actually get sick of hearing 138+ bpm trance tracks that are released nowadays, they all sound the same.. I don't complain about the way trance music is going because there are still the classics that you can go back and listen too.. music has to evolve

I think the point is that Anjunabeats doesn't release quality trance music like they once did. Yes to each their own in terms of musical taste. But Anjunabeats has ditched the real underground sound of trance for that whole trouse craze. Anjunadeep still has the underground sound many of us love. The 12 people I'm referring to (now 13) are those who liked the initial comment you replied to.

Kind of a pointless thing to say.. people are always going to disagree or agree with your opinion, but what 12 people are you speaking of?

MysticalTechno

Well theres at least 12 people who disagree with you. Just saying.
