This sounds exactly like howlin wolf electric version from '68

@TredeciSeptimo: It's a cover of a 50's blues song by Howlin Wolf. Jimmy Page of course is known for loving that stuff, and Zeppelin probably covered the song live. And of course, Soundgarden loves Zeppelin, as well as music from that era. So this is a homage to that late 60's/early 70's bluesy rock sound.

Ok, I've heard this riff from Led Zeppelin live shows in the 60's. Did Jimmy write it and they're referencing that, or was it an earlier riff they both are borrowing? It seems very white English art student in style...

This is exactly what a cover should be. I listened to this song. I listened to the original. I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that they are the same song. It sounds like they wrote it, which is what I think Chris once said is what they always try to do with covers. My only complaint is that I wish he brought in the high notes a bit earlier so I could enjoy that eargasm for a bit longer.

Another modified and improved version...

Those lyrics near the end are just stupidly high. I seriously wonder how he can physically hit those notes.

Agreed, but it's actually *not* falsetto - he's screaming at the very top of his head voice.

The riff and slower version comes from the howlin wolf psychedelic album he released in 69

Soundgarden actually opened for Guns N Roses a phew times back in the day according to slash's book, he said that he and Duff got along very well with Kim and Chris

Let's say Fillmore West 1969, Led Zeppelin... where a lot of us are knowing this riff.

To be fair to Axl I think that quote was from a few years before Soundgarden toured with them. Could be wrong though

I'm guessing Soundgarden had a huge Led Zepplin influence so that might be why it has the same intro but The Lemon Song has lyrics from "Travellin Riverside Blues" by Robert Johnson as well as parts of "Killin' Floor" by Howlin Wolf.(just sayin')

in a 1969 (or 70) version of lemon song, the same into was played. i don't know anything about this band, but i don't think they were around then.( just saying)
