Met him when he was on tour in England way back in the 60's, can't remember for sure but I think the Yardbird's were his backing group.

You are taking this story too concretely. Sonny is the goat (notice his goatee). He was psychologically rebelling against his guilt for having the privileges of a Black man who was making a lot of money for a white man. He would go on binges and miss the show that made him famous (sound like Hank Williams?). Before Max Moore owner of King Biscuit Flour had to bail him out of the drunk tank to get him to do the show. Now the judge started giving him "time not fines." He left town.
