An unusual and seldom-heard adaptation of Canadian Ian Tyson's classic cowboy/rodeo song "Someday Soon." The Kingston Trio converted Tyson's composition from a plaintive. almost wistful tune of hope from a young girl to a more assertive and masculine declaration by the youthful rodeo cowboy of the number - a very different take on the song as it is more familiarly known in renditions by (among many others) Judy Colline and Tyson himself.

The video is a montage of photographs of rodeo performers interspersed with portraits and sculptures by Frederic Remington, the most enduring of the cowboy artists of the early twentieth century.

Hello M. Lebreton - Thanks for your continued comments on these videos. I agree with you completely. Judy Collins is the best, and Ian and Sylvia's original is a classic as well. This one is interesting to me because it is different, almost a new song. regards, Jim Moran CompVid101

Hi CompV I was fanchbrezoneg before, this song is on the album "Nick, Bob and John", the best song of this vinyl was "Farewell" a Bob Dylan's work, very very nice, the version of Judy Collins was better, incredible.

This is the first version of "Someday Soon" that I heard. There have been some great artist that did it very well, from Ian Tyson(writer) to Suzy Bogguss, to whoever is the latest to record or perform it. But John Stewart and his distinctive voice set the apart from anyone who ever did it. It will always be my favorite version of this now classic song.

@dwagner, the 80's lineup, if it included Nick, would have included George Grove, who has been a Trio member longer than anyone other than Bob Shane. Bob was always a member of the Trio until his recent retirement. Could it have been Bob with George & either Roger Gambill or Bob Haworth (former Brothers Four)?

John Stewart sings well, but I like the original Kingston Trio with Dave Guard's voice, and banjo playing. However, the Kingston Trio is still the greatest.

Each to his/her own. I happen to like ALL the versions of this song, starting with the original of Ian and Sylvia, then the most widely-known version by Collins, who IMHO (with Baez and Joni Mitchell) has no real equal as a female acoustic artist singing today. Auto-tuned or not, Boguss does a fine job - as does Crystal Gayle. The Comparative Video 101 blog that I uploaded this for has all of those versions.

Hi Alpha! We're all entitled to our own viewpoints, right? I'll bring up three more thoughts here: 1) I was listening to the Trio's version in the early 60s and it's always remained a meaningful piece to me (they also play their own instrumentation), and 2) Judy is okay, nothing special, but just ok, and 3) Suzy Bogguss is a flake. It's auto-tune, key-correction, contemporary Nashville sludge. Another chirpy chick-singer. Gimme the original every time.

The Decca catalog is really quite underrated. KT detractors can say what they want. The Trio made great music from their heyday in the late 50's, through a major change (Dave Guard to John Stewart), and thanks to Bob Shane's bulldog determination (and George Grove's accomplishments) through until the present day. Thanks for all the music, guys, & we love you!

John Stewart sounds great with the KT in this Ian Tyson masterpiece, and of course when Judy does this song....wow

@Rieslingontheriver And you choose to be so hateful because?

@cruztacean OK Crusty, you just keep on loving the song to pieces. My previous comments stand. But you stay away from those microphones, ok? The music industry already has too many wannabes.

@Rieslingontheriver I must disagree. As a (non-published, hardly ever performed in my life, totally inexperienced) female singer myself, I just LOVE this song to pieces. If I were twenty years younger and had the opportunity and knew half of what it takes to make it in the business, I would absolutely jump at a chance to record Someday Soon. Even if I didn't make a dime off of it.

Beautiful harmonies by the KT.

This is a beautiful song and the Kingston Trio put a totally different take on it. Great harmonies and guitar playing. I saw them in the 80's with Nick Reynolds and two newer members. They were good but nothing like these three. This song really grabs my heart!

This song requires the male perspective. Judy & Suzy were just looking for financial success, while John Stewart and the Kingston Trio (obviously) loved the song. It's as tho Ian wrote the song just for them... and I used to date a girl in Greeley....

Cool version. I love the Kingston Trio and John Stewart's voice is great here. My favorite version of this song, though, is Ian's duet with Sylvia. Good job though & nice pics.

Really fine song from the collection Decca put out on the Kingston Trio after their tenure with Capital Records had run out. I recently uploaded some of my music ("Blinkymyt" in the Search bar) along the same lines (acoustic instruments of the legacy folk sounds. The Kingston Trio was, and still are, one of my all-time favorites. Thanks for compiling this one - beautiful slides. Have you ever heard Ian and Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds"?...great.
