She later married D'Urberville, but then murdered him, which lead to her own death. Imagine a maypole that people are dancing around that slowly but surely is becoming "tied-up" in strings. To cut these strings allows one to escape, but only for a short time, as the result is a death-penalty. Also, interesting to note, Kelli Ali has a Tiger tattoo (her Chinese zodiac) and uses wings and daisy chains as symbols in her career and has produced a song "Almost Diamonds." Esoteric, I know.

This is a very odd song about China (String of Pearls) slowly manipulating and "tying up" the world by playing the Western game of Capitalism. It's also a song about Tess of the D'Urbervilles, in which Tess is the old world whose name was sold (for capital) to a false D'Urberville. It's unclear as to whether she was forced upon by this person (whom she worked for) or if she allowed herself to be acted upon. She had a child by him, named "Sorrow" who died.
