This song is SMOKIN`!!!! This sounds more like a record from 1932 then 38. I LOVE THIS AWESOME version! This has got to be one of the most haunting melodies ever recorded, along with several You have posted. I have several versions of this song including the one by the Casa Loma Orchestra on a Brunswick from 1932.

Yep, smoking keeps you thin and one tends to die in time and quick if the medics aren't to obstinate. As long as there is no alternative i'm all for it.

One of the best Himber/Nash performances by this superb orchestra. Thank you!

Hello Grzegorz - its a super beautiful video. I smoked briefly while in college in the States. I hate the smell of cigarettes but some pipe smells are nice. The Labor Day weekend went well in Chicago - not without a huge Polish fest - complete with Polish food and Polish music. It was fun - even though it should last me till next Labor Day!

@240252 Neither, I'm sad to say. I quit smoking in 1986, two years before you visited America. When I said "our" smoking days, I meant it in a generic way, a reference to all ex-smokers. But I do recall you "lighting up" on both occasions. Oh, now I'm really craving a cig, the joy of that first long long puff...

@barbcard Yes, you suddenly reminded me of our Iowa City evenings, when you DID smoke a cigarette, as it seems tome now... Am I right? My memory, however, does NOT picture you back in Washington DC in "Europa" Restaurant, sitting in front of me and holding a cigarette... Which of these images is true?

@bill3murr Indeed, it's amazing how deeply a cigarette was a part of a popular culture in first decades of the XXth Century! My Dad enjoyed an emancipated type of a "girl with a cigarette" and my dear Mum - who was rather a sweet dreamer - tried a hundred times to learn smoking, coughing and shedding tears - but fortunately, her healthy organism rejected it and she never did.

@genia106 Genia, how stupid of me! I made this movie especially to celebrate your new cigarette holder and I skipped to insert an appropriate dedication! :-((( So please, take it now.

@phonomono78s Thank you for recommending me Casa Loma's version! I just watched it in YT, having additional pleasure of a few minutes with the excerpts from the original movie "Alice in Wonnderland". Really worth seeing!

@Bigband78 I just opened your Mills Bros' version which I somehow skipped to see before and I just love it! This tune is just paralysing. Who knows how many people started smoking just to imagine themselves as stylish with the cigarette as these words describe it!

@camille885 It's a good comparison, indeed. I'd have hesitated to call his voice "angel" but when you said it, I think you're right
